JENNIFER WU
Seattle, Washington

Watercolor has always called out to me for its free spirit, its poetic and bold expression, and its fluidity that can seemly unite the aesthetic expression of divergent backgrounds from both East and West.

I first fell in love with watercolor when I read Trevor Chamberlain's "A Personal View". Seeing his watercolors was a magical opening to me. I started to paint soon after that, around year 2000, not long after I moved to Seattle, in the Pacific Northwest. The Northwest offers workshops with great watercolorists - I have since taken workshops with Eric Wiegardt, Alvaro Castagnet and William Hewson.

I am a native of Beijing and a software engineer by profession. Both the Eastern and Western worlds are my inspirations. I like to wander in Seattle’s Pike Place Market and the little towns out on the Pacific Ocean shore. I also deeply enjoy breathing in life from Beijing’s characteristically narrow streets and alleyways. They all become the subjects of many of my paintings.

I hope you can see the influence of both the Eastern and the Western aesthetic in my work. The experience of painting watercolor is awe-inspiring and rewarding. I’m glad I’ve lived it, and I’m thankful for the technology that lets me share my art with you.
